The student of Turkish Studies MA program Muna Asenwar participated in the 10th Annual MUBIT doctoral workshop organized and hosted by the Near and Middle Eastern Studies Department at Basel University. The workshop was held this year under the theme “Palestine Versus the Palestinians? Writing Palestinians into History”, and was led by Prof. Beshara Doumani, the Mahmoud Darwish Professor of Palestinian Studies at Brown University and President of Birzeit University.
The workshop involved several weeks of intensive self-study before the five working sessions held physically at the University of Basel, with the participation of 16 participants from Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland, and Turkey. The discussions mainly focused on analyzing the historical evolution of the concepts of “Palestine” as a territorial unit, and of the “Palestinians” as a people, in the light of the various political and social inspirations and limitations of the processes, and the potential futures and directions of the research on the topic.
