Sadberk Hanım Museum Excursion

11.10.2024

A note by Prof. Suraiya Faroqhi, academic advisor of the History and Archaeology Club, about the club's first excursion in the 2024-2025 Academic Year...

Dear students, dear members of the faculty (if interested)

My greetings to all of you!

I send you this message as the academic advisor of the History and Archeology Club at Ibn Haldun University. We plan to undertake our first excursion on Saturday, 12 October 2024.

In autumn, the weather can be changeable, but we hope that a visit to the Sadberk Hanım Müzesi in Büyükdere will be enjoyable in good or bad weather. This is an important collection, which contains non-royal luxuries (and on special occasions imperial luxuries too) that were mostly accessible to wealthy inhabitants of the city. The ‘regular’ collection includes archeological items housed in a separate building, Ottoman textiles and clothing, İznik and Kütahya faience, as well as metalwork. The section showing Iznik tiles and tableware is particularly valuable as the Çinili Köşk in the complex of the Archeological Museum, home to the largest collection of this type, is currently under restoration. Moreover, at present there is an exhibition showing the clothes of elite children who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – frequently these pieces were part of the wardrobes of princes and princesses.

For students, the tickets are moderately priced. Presumably, the visit will take about two hours, or two and a half hours if we visit the archeological section too. Afterwards, I hope that we can take our tea on the Bosporus, perhaps profiting from a bit of autumnal sunshine.

We will meet at 11.00 in front of the museum. There are buses going to Sarıyer that drop you off right in front of the museum. You can go on a bus following the Bosporus, or else take the Metro to Hacıosman and hop on the bus at the final stop of the Metro. There are minibuses from Beşiktaş too.

See you all on Saturday 12 October!

All best,

Suraiya.
