An Italian Physician in the Service of the Ottomans: Giovanni Mascellini and His Artis Medicæ

Dr. M. Fatih Çalışır, Assistant Professor at IHU History Department, presented a paper entitled “An Italian Physician in the Service of the Ottomans: Giovanni Mascellini (d.1675) and His Artis Medicæ (1673)” in the Second International Congress on the Ottoman Studies, Tirana/Albania. Based on the intriguing biography of Giovanni Mascellini and his Latin medical work, Dr. Çalışır’s paper aimed to demonstrate intertwined social relations and intellectual activities in Istanbul and thus to contribute to the revisionist historiography on the seventeenth-century Ottoman Empire.
